Lyrics
You're on the phone with your girlfriend, she's upsetShe's going off about something that you said'Cause she doesn't get your humor like I doI'm in the room, it's a typical Tuesday nightI'm listening to the kind of music she doesn't likeAnd she'll never know your story like I doBut she wears short skirtsI wear T-shirtsShe's Cheer Captain, and I'm on the bleachersDreaming about the day when you wake up and findThat what you're looking for has been here the whole timeIf you could see that I'm the oneWho understands youBeen here all alongSo, why can't you see?You belong with meYou belong with meWalk in the streets with you in your worn-out jeansI can't help thinking this is how it ought to beLaughing on a park bench thinking to myselfHey, isn't this easy? And you've got a smileThat can light up this whole townI haven't seen it in a whileSince she brought you downYou say you're fine, I know you better than thatHey, what you doing with a girl like that? She wears high heelsI wear sneakersShe's Cheer Captain, and I'm on the bleachersDreaming about the day when you wake up and findThat what you're looking for has been here the whole timeIf you could see that I'm the oneWho understands youBeen here all alongSo, why can't you see?You belong with meStanding by and waiting at your backdoorAll this time how could you not know, baby? You belong with meYou belong with meOh, I remember you driving to my houseIn the middle of the nightI'm the one who makes you laughWhen you know you're 'bout to cryAnd I know your favorite songsAnd you tell me 'bout your dreamsThink I know where you belongThink I know it's with meCan't you see that I'm the oneWho understands you?Been here all alongSo, why can't you see?You belong with meStanding by and waiting at your backdoorAll this time how could you not know, baby? You belong with meYou belong with meYou belong with meHave you ever thought just maybeYou belong with me?You belong with me
About
You Belong With Me is the story of a guy who gets into such a toxic relationship to see how much another girl likes him. It appears on Taylor's sophomore album, Fearless.
Taylor said the following about the track on a page on Big Machine Records' website, which has since been removed:
I overheard a friend of mine talking to his girlfriend and she was completely on the defensive, saying [things] 'I love you more than anything! Baby, I'm so sorry.' She was just yelling at him! I felt very bad for him at that moment. So I came up with the first line 'You're on the phone with your girlfriend, she's upset, she's saying something you said,' and I made her run into the story that I love her and she needs her. stay with me instead.
What has co-writer Liz Rose said about the song?
'You Belong with Me' was written at the end of Fearless's recording session. She said, 'I am finishing the record on Monday. Let's write an uptempo song.' We wrote 'You Belong with Me' in an hour or two. It's amazing to go back to a work tape and listen to it, because you won't even believe the nuance you see in the album version. When she is writing something, she is already building it in her mind. She listens to everything.
What did the artists say about the song?
Swift told the story behind the song:
I came to the writing session with Liz Rose and said, I got the idea. I overheard a friend of mine talking to his girlfriend and he was totally defensive, 'No, baby... I had to get off the phone too quickly... I tried to call you back right away... of course. I love you. more than anything! Baby, I'm so sorry.' She was just yelling at him! I felt very bad for him at that moment. So the first line I came up with was 'You're on the phone with your girlfriend, she's upset, going on about everything you said,' and I ran her into the story line that I love her and He needs to be with me instead. That just became the whole picture. It was really fun for us to write the line, 'She wears a short skirt, I wear a T-shirt.'
He explained its more basic meaning:
The song is basically about wanting someone who is with this girl who doesn't appreciate her at all. Basically like 'girl-next-door-itis'. You like this guy you've had all your life, and you know him better than him but somehow the popular girl gets the guy every time.
